“Tigers are majestic, gorgeous, royal. Saving every tiger is important because saving tigers means saving their habitat – the forests. And forests give us clean air and water. I believe only 200 remain of the Malayan tiger. Time is running out.”
“I believe that the Malayan tiger is an important part of the ecosystem and it provides the necessary checks and balances, as do many endangered animal species around the world. Caring about tigers also means caring about the Earth and saving the ecosystem that we live in, so that it exists for many decades to come.”
“Tigers are highly sought after for their medicinal values and their skin. Being a keystone species, they are needed to control the population of others such as wild boars. The #SWAG100Challenge is meaningful because we are able to do our part to protect such majestic wildlife on a day-to-day basis.”
“Despite being at the top of the food chain, tigers too can fall prey to the effects of globalization and progress. We need to preserve that part of Earth that is becoming extinct, so there will be tigers in the wild to maintain the ecosystem. Taking part in the #SWAG100Challenge, I hope to raise awareness of the plight of the Malayan Tiger.”
“All wildlife is important to us, but being closer to home, Malayan tigers are especially significant. They are unique, beautiful and kind animals that we must take care of before we lose them forever. They are close to extinction and very soon it will be too late to save them.”
“We need to conserve and make healthy the wild spaces remaining in Malaysia, our close neighbour. Living in Singapore we are physically remote from being able to directly help, but by raising funds, I am able to pass financial resources to the people that will be able to make a difference there. These funds can fund patrols to eliminate deadly snares, monitor current developments, and finance tree planting to capture carbon and provide cover for migrating forest animals.”
“I see the #SWAG100Challenge as an opportunity to be the 'link bridge' between the wildlife, conservation and biodiversity community and my network of friends. As the 'bridge', I hope to create awareness in my family and friends and show them what we can do to contribute to tiger conservation efforts, no matter how small the effort may be.”
“Our family has been on Saving Tigers Together Family Outreach. Participating in this family outreach programme made me realize that everyone can be part of the solution in conservation work. Volunteering together as a family also took us away from the hustle-bustle of our daily routines for some bonding time, a memory that we will truly treasure!”
Why Are We Doing This?
Once a thriving native resident of Singapore and Malaysia, the Malayan tiger’s population has drastically been reduced over the years due to hunting, poaching, and habitat loss. When the last tiger in Singapore was shot in 1930, this iconic wildcat became extinct in our country. In Malaysia, with only fewer than 200 individuals left in the wild, the Malayan tiger is precariously close to extinction.
To reverse the decline, active monitoring of illegal activities in the jungle is desperately needed and this active patrol does not come cheaply: MYCAT needs US$100,000 annually to employ 50 men and women to patrol and restore key tiger habitats in and around the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor, which lies to the west of Taman Negara National Park.
SWAG raised and donated S$25,000 to MYCAT in 2019 and we have pledged to match the amount in 2020. While COVID-19 has made face-to-face fundraising events impossible, we hope to count on the SWAG100 Challenge to help us meet our goal and do our part in safeguarding a future for the Malayan tiger.
