The Malayan tiger, Panthera tigris jacksoni, is named after renowned tiger conservationist Peter Jackson, in honour of his years of work for tigers.
The sub-species, previously included as Indochinese tiger Panthera tigris corbetti is, now divided into two groups: one in northern Indochina and the other in the Malay Peninsula, which encompasses the southern end of Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
Scientists from the National Cancer Institute's Laboratory of Genomic Diversity in USA conducted DNA analysis from various samples of blood, skin and hair from 134 captive tigers across Asia. Some of the specimens used in the study were obtained from tigers that were captured by DWNP in human-tiger conflict situations; genetically pure tigers.
The scientists discovered that the tigers found here are unique only to the Malay Peninsula.

This unique species has once roamed the land in Singapore, but is now locally extinct since 1930 due to direct human impact.
Who do we support?
We are passionate about all wildcat species of the world, but we have a special love for the Malayan tiger.
We believe in taking meaningful action that helps us achieve our mission of building grassroot support for wildcat conservation and to realize our goal of raising funds to protect the world’s remaining 200 Malayan tigers living in the wild.
We support the work of the
Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT). MYCAT acts as a platform for communication and collaboration between the NGOs and the Malaysian government for sharing information and resources, and cooperation towards the common goal of saving Malayan tigers.
We raise awareness of wildcat conservation through regularly held events, such as the Wildcat Lecture series and the Singapore Tiger Week.
We recruit volunteers to take direct action to protect wildcats and their habitats by participating in CAT Walks in Malaysia.
We educate children about wildcats and nurture in them a love for wildlife through our Little Tiger children’s book series and by hosting Little Tiger Wildcat Parties.
We raise funds for the Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers through sales of SWAG merchandise and by hosting an annual charity dinner.
The Tyger by William Blake, reinterpreted by CAT Walker George Jacobs
To Blake, God made tigers, the question was why
Save Malayan tigers! Should we now try?
Or will we let poaching and deforestation
Disappear tigers from Malaysia’s nation?
Once humans were a species without distinction,
But now, we are causing the Sixth Mass Extinction.
In Blake’s time, only a billion humans were alive
How can today’s 8 billion find resources to thrive?
The dread hands and feet of Will Blake’s verse
Are now humans’ technology – the other species’ curse.
Tech empowers poaching in tigers’ habitats(1)
Deforestation is done by agri copycats
Blake speaks of aspiring and seizing the fire
Could saving tigers be today’s desire?
Perhilitan(2), MYCAT(3) and other groups, too
Are fiercely making this harmonious dream come true.
With help from tigers’ human friends
Let’s make sure this tiger species never ends
Tigers, tigers will continue burning bright
As is all animals’ immortal right.
In the forests of the night and day
As the Earth enjoys a more peaceful way.
